Shared Foundations
According to the AASL National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries, the Shared Foundations, "describes the core values that learners, school librarians, and school libraries should reflect and promote" (17).
The six Shared Foundations are: Inquire, Include, Collaborate, Curate, Explore, and Engage. These foundations were developed by the AASL based on extensive research and library media specialist feedback to be "inherent" in the Common Beliefs.
Each Shared Foundation is represented under each standard with Key Commitments and Domain areas.
At Cecil County Public Schools, the Shared Foundations are the heart of our Information Literacy and Computer Science lessons. Our curriculum committee and writers start with the standard and Shared Foundation in order to develop the scope of a unit and lesson plan.

Key Commitments
The Key Commitments "spell out the essential components of the Shared Foundations," and "expand" the definition of each Shared Foundation (AASL, 17).
These expanded definitions provide a greater focus for our curriculum writers in aligning lessons with the Shared Foundations.

Domains
The Domains are the "interlinked nature of the school librarians' roles (as) translated into the learning categories" (AASL, 17). The Domains are:
Each domain presents laser-focused ways for a student to demonstrated competency of a Shared Foundation on a different level.
- Think
- Create
- Share
- Grow
Each domain presents laser-focused ways for a student to demonstrated competency of a Shared Foundation on a different level.
Competencies
"The goal of competency-based education is to support learners' growth through personalized learning experiences" (AASL, 19).
Cecil County Public Schools prides itself on personalizing student learning experiences on the district level, building level, and grade level. Each lesson is created with student population at the forefront. Our Library Media Specialists then have the ability to modify and adjust the lesson within the Domains to suit each student and classroom. The learner then becomes the "center" and the focus becomes growth for the individual (AASL, 19).
The district Library Media Mission and Vision Statements reflect the goals of our competency-based curriculum.
