Mrs. Boyko's Library Philosophy
It is my belief at every child is endowed with the ability to learn; however, every child will learn differently. In the library media center, this sits at the core of all instruction.
Within the walls of the library media center, all children can be free to explore their learning styles and develop new skills, from technology to information synthesis. Through the integration of universal-design learning and cross-curricular topics, the library media specialist can utilize collaboration, exploration, discovery, synthesis, and critical thinking skills to challenge students to develop their own learning approaches.
It is also my belief that if a child doesn't enjoy reading, it is simply because they have not found the right text. I'm willing to go the extra mile to find that personal connection with a student, find what motivates him or her, and design a learning opportunity that plays to his or her strengths. There is no better place to do this than in the library media center. We have more resources in more formats than any classroom will ever have. The ALA/AASL standards guide our students along an avenue for learning, but allow us to select the mode in which we travel.
Because of this philosophy, I believe that the most effective library media center is the most flexible. Makerspaces, print, digital, and media formats provide every student with multiple opportunities to expand their critical thinking skills. The atmosphere should be warm, welcoming, and invigorating to the mind. It should be an area that inspires and excites the learner to explore with or without guidance.
The library media center should also be open and utilized, not just by students, but by staff and community members. I am an ambassador of learning, and it is my belief that the library media center can benefit all stakeholders. As a communicator and collaborator, I will be the link that draws all staff and community together. My library media center should be a place in which anyone can learn.
It is my philosophy that if I can achieve all of this, I will have made the greatest lasting impact I can in my students’ lives, and those of the staff and community members I touch.
