Reconsideration of Materials Policy
At CCPS, we strive to fill our libraries with a widely diverse and varied collection, free of bias, in accordance with Freedom of Speech. Occasionally, objections may arise to material. Should this happen, one of two procedures will be inacted:
CCPS. "Objections to Media Center Materials." Cecil County Board of Education, 2014.
- Scenario A:
- The principal will immediately convene a committee composed of the principal or his/her designee as chair person, and including the school media specialist, the appropriate instructional coordinators, two other teachers, and two members of the community.
- The committee will thoroughly investigate the complaint. The investigation may involve additional people who are invited to contribute their views and should provide opportunity for the individual or representative group to elaborate upon the complaint. The work will be judged as a whole, considering the author's/producer's intent rather than focusing on individual words, phrases, pictures, or incidents taken out of context.
- Upon completion of the review, the principal shall cause the committee to formally adopt a written response to the complaint. This written response shall be reported to the individual or group originally lodging the complaint and a copy forwarded to the Superintendent and the Associate Superintendent for Education Services.
- An appeal of this decision may be made to the Associate Superintendent for Education Services by the individual or group originally lodging the objection. In the event of an appeal, Procedure B will be followed.\
