"The selection of print and non-print materials for the media center reflects the goals of education for the Cecil County Public Schools, including current curriculum trends, methods of instruction, modes of learning, and the availability of materials and equipment to meet various levels of learning and individual student needs. The school media specialist is responsible for evaluating and selecting media center materials. The media specialist will accept suggestions from teachers, principals, students, and community members for specific materials. Before purchase, all materials shall be evaluated using reliable professional selection aids, lists, and reviewing media recommended by the American Library Association. All material shall be evaluated before purchase. Reliable professional selection aids, lists, and reviewing media will be used as guides to assist in the selection process. Existing media collections will be examined periodically in order to update and replace items."
"Criteria for choosing materials must be flexible enough to permit each school to purchase those items best suited to its specific needs. Criteria are stated as general principles to allow for evaluation of each item on its merits and intended use. Evaluative criteria encourage selection, not censorship and works shall be judged as a whole, considering the author's/producer's intent, rather than focusing solely upon individual works, phrases, pictures, or incidents taken out of context" (Section I, IIAC CCPS Policies and Regulations).
Media specialists work with students, teachers, principals, and instructional coordinators/program facilitators in selecting print and non-print materials to supplement and complement instructional programs. They utilize a variety of selection sources as guides in the choice of materials ordered for media centers. Please see selection sources for more information.
